Best Game to Movie Adaptations
Usually it is books that are the source for inspiration for many Hollywood movies, but that is also true for a handfull of video games out there. Some of the most famous video games – in their own right, in their own category and time of popularity – gave rise to cinematic adaptations that were more or less successful. We will go over few game titles that have inspired movies that developed a cult following and made good earnings at the box office. These are the Best Game to adaptations ever released in Hollywood.
Mortal Kombat
Where do we start on a game that was the most brutal for its time and paved the way for graphic violence that went beyond just splattering someone’s head with a plasma gun. Mortal Kombat’s first edition in 1995 gave the player the chance to execute the opponent after having beaten him or her in a fight. The decapitations, pulling of hearts, twisting of spines and other gruesome acts of horrific insanity were not lost upon the several installments of the Mortal Kombat movie series. The first Mortal Kombat movie grossed over $122 million worldwide. Two years later Mortal Kombat: Annihilation was released but earned only $53 million. A big production company is said to be interested in investing in a third full feature film, giving the ultimate seal that Mortal Kombat the game is one of the best game-to-movie adaptations.
Tomb Raider
This video game series has one of the longest lists of sequels and editions. Tomb Raider one, two and three were released from 1996 to 1998. Since then a total of 14 editions have been released – the last one, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, coming out in 2018. The British archaeologist Lara Croft who is searching for lost artifacts in far forgotten ruins around the world found her flesh and skin rendition in Angelina Jolie in 2001, which became the highest-grossing game to movie adaptation before Prince of Persia took that spot some years later. The first movie closely resembled the plot of the game series, where Lara Croft is a true badass who fights robots and gnarly beasts. The sequel to the first film was also successful although it did not gross as much as the first edition.
Prince of Persia
This was one of the best games the Commodore machine could replicate for the computer screen. From there it got its remakes for Game Boy, Nintendo, PC, Playstation and Xbox. It’s hard to tell why Prince of Persia retained people’s attention despite there being so many new and exciting games in the 90s, but it did and by doing that it made history. Prince of Persia got a number of excellent adaptations as a 3D game for PC, Xbox and Playstation and are subsequent sequels are highly anticipated. The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time hollywood movie released in 2010 was written, directed and produced by top shelf Hollywood cast. The movie grossed more than $336 million, bolstering the success of the Prince of Persia franchise for the history books.
